| My DJ History | The first time I Dj'ed was around the age of 8 or 9 with my dad at a family wedding (no this was not a paying gig). I was always interested in playing music and entertaining crowds at a very early age. The reason for this was that my dad was also a DJ (a pretty good one in his era) so I got interested in the art form and learnt a lot from him. As I grew older opportunities to actually play music became few and far between as my father had retired from dj'ing and turntables were not really accessible. But at any event with a DJ involved I would be right there looking at him observing there movements and styles. This continued until I reached the age of seventeen (17) when a good friend of mine, and me decided to form a sound system. We started out with two very old turntables and some even older records but as time passed and we started making a little money conditions improved. The following two years proved crucial to my DJ Career as during this time I learned the fundamentals of playing and manipulating music from DJ Kaution (Now of Point Blank fame) and with regular gigs was able to showcase my skills in front of small crowds. I would never say I was a legend or as good as my DJ friends but I could hold a small vibe when need be. As time passed I achieved another milestone in playing music when I was given the opportunity by Gary Mr. Smooth to be his Disc Jockey on City Sound 97.5FM. I must thank Kaution and Mitchie for introducing and sort of setting up my radio DJ career, as I used to be playing samples for them on their show which was on just before Gary's. Thanks also to Gary Mr. Smooth and the Management of City Sound for believing in me then. It was this radio show that enabled me to actually develop a name for myself on airwaves and in the streets of Grenada. It is also through this relationship with Gary that I later on met Junior Star whose show I am currently the DJ on, on Fridays and Saturdays(once my schedule permits). Always the person to want to learn from someone or something the experience at City Sounds continues to teach me a lot especially from visiting DJ's and performers. Currently I am an In-House DJ at Club Bananas and a radio DJ on City Sound FM, two achievements which I am very proud of. My DJ career was littered with ups and downs and I would like to now publicly thank all my DJ friends who helped me along the way some directly and indirectly and they are My Father(Pelé Darbeau), Eagles(Natural Vibes Sound System), Skipper Sound Station, Jus-Gus, Joie T., Blackstorm, Maestro Peck, Kebo, DJ Hotwax, DJ Simon and most important of them all GOD(yes he is a DJ too), through him all this was made possible and allowed to continue. I must also give a big thank you to all my friends and family who supported me along the way, the journey has just begun. So in a nutshell I am always humbled by opportunities granted to me and as long as my chosen careers provide me with these I will continue to take advantage of them. |
